Dominated and embellished by the culture of many peoples, the history of Sciacca is among the oldest in Sicily and its historical stratification makes it one of the most interesting places. The first rulers were the Greeks and the Carthaginians who called it Terma for its thermal waters. Later, the Arabs called it Xacca, which in Latin became Sacca, and then became the current Sciacca.

Built in the shape of an amphitheater, Sciacca overlooks the clear waters of the sea of Sicily and the island of Pantelleria. From afar you can see Tunis. Mount San Calogero rises to the east part, from whose slopes spring the thermal waters. A few kilometers away is the archaeological site of Valle dei Templi, the most sublime testimony of Greek civilization in Sicily.

Rich in works of art and fine architecture, the city offers the visitor a path that winds through walls and alleys, monuments and churches. A walk through the narrow streets of the characteristic old town will allow you to admire the many artisan’s workshop dedicated to the production of decorated ceramics, of which Sciacca is famous. From the large terrace of Piazza Scandaliato you can see a spectacular view of the harbor, full of fishing boats.

Sciacca will give you a coastline of golden beaches a few kilometers long that has both equipped bathing establishments and wilder and quieter corners of free beaches. The most famous city event is the Carnival which, for over a century, has attracted around two hundred thousand people every year. An unmissable popular festival, in which costumes, choreography and floats make the atmosphere magical.
